Version 2.28
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This version was originally not supposed to be released at all, as we
intended to have 3.0 out by now. Unfortunately, finishing 3.0 has taken
longer than expected, and therefore this version is being distributed.
The most significant changes since 2.27 involve F-MACROW.EXE. We are
releasing a new version (1.06) where we have added a set of powerful macro
heuristics, which should detect the vast majority of new Word viruses.
Also, F-MACROW is now able to scan for viruses inside encrypted documents.
F-PROT 2.28 itself has only been updated to handle a few new "in-the-wild"
viruses, but detection of other newly received viruses has been added to
the new (version 3) program.
Version 3.0
------------------------------------------------------------------------
We expect to have a public beta version of 3.0 out in a few days, possibly
by the time you read this - check our web site, http://www.complex.is for
information on the release of version 3.0.
The major functionality changes in 3.0 are the following:
F-PROT 3.0 detects more viruses (currently over 14.000) with a single
program than F-PROT 2.28 and F-MACROW 1.06 combined.
F-PROT 3.0 can scan recursively inside ZIP and ARJ archives - support
for other archivers like RAR will be added if there is demand for it.
The VIRSTOP program will be replaced with a VxD program, which has the
same detection rate as the main scanner, unlike VIRSTOP, which uses a
subset of the F-PROT scanning engine.
The virus-detetion code in version 3.0 is now entirely "data-driven",
which means that updates will generally not require changes to the
F-PROT program, but only the SIGN.DEF file. This means that we can
easily provide much more frequent updates than in the past, and we
will at least make weekly updates awailable on our FTP site.
